Post-lecture on data viz
Last week I had the fortune of sharing best practices in static data visualizations to a large group of PhD students at my alumni institution. These PhDs, across all STEM fields, are finalists in the 3 Minute Thesis , or 3MT- a worldwide competition originating out of Australia.
Academia fails teaching graduate students how to effectively pitch their research, share their results, and generate buzz around their work. I am lucky to have learned directly from some of the most remarkable data visualizers, such as Edward Tufte and Stephanie Evergreen, among others. While a fed with HHS, our center director asked me to promote a book on data visualization - and I got a chance to influence a whole team's perspectives and learning. We read 'Effective Data Storytelling' by Dykes.
Last week, I pitched a 7-step process for how to distill one's dissertation (or research project) into a single static data visualization and choosing what to display. Interested in the framework or the whole presentation? Hit me up!
